Important Places in Akkalkot:

Khandoba MandirNear the Bus Stand. The place where Shri Swamy visited (First, like Sai Baba) and stayed there for three days without speaking or eating anything. To mark this history, Swamy's stone Padhukas are established here by the late Shri Gajanan Maharaj. Also one can remember Swamy's love of animals in 'Sundari (Monkey)'s Tomb here.

VATAVRUKSHA MANDIR (BANYAN TREE) The Banyan Tree under which Shri Samarth Maharaj stayed for about 21 years (1857 to 1878 A.D) in AKKALKOT has become a world renounced Holy Place. All types of devotees from Prince (Chatrapathi Shivaji's son Sahaji Raje Bhonseley, Akkalkot King Shri. Maloji Raje) to paupers, visited swamy and got his blessings by remarkable Leelas (Divine plays) here. As Shri Swamy Samarth has stayed in Akkalkot until his Samadhi, He is popularly known as Shri Akkalkot Maharaj.

Devotees can have darshan of his Athma Linga Padhukas, His Gadi (bed and Cot), His life size photograph with his original dress and Rudraksha Mala, etc in this Temple. Very particularly, His presence is still felt in His Padhukas established under the Vatavruksha where he seated, one can hear "Ram.... Ram..." like breathing without sound and get ecstatic experience. Regular Poojas from 5 a.m. (Kakad Aarthi) till 10 p.m. are done here with the participation of thousands of devotees from various parts of the world.

Sri Muralidhar Mandir near Vatavruksha Mandir.

Sheik Nooruddin Baba's Dargah. (Tomb)

This Baba was more popular even before 1857 when Swamy came to Akkalkot and his fame had crossed all the limits of religions and castes. Shri Swamy Maharaj used to visit this Dargah and Nooruddin Baba (in spirit) also visited Swamy during Mid-nights. (The closed doors of Banyan Tree Temple automatically open in Mid-Night). In this Dargah one can find a Brahmin Boy's Tomb along with Sheik Noor Baba's Tomb.

Sri Balappa Maharaj Guru Mandir.

Sri Balappa was one of the ardent and sincere disciples of Shri Swamy Maharaj. He was the root cause of the Name Japa - Kalpavrusha Maha Mantram. (The All Giver) "Shri Swamy Samarth! Jai Jai Swamy Samarth!"

He was about to end his life by not even drinking a drop of water after Swamy's Maha Samadhi in 1878. By seeing his utmost love and devotion, Shri Samarth Maharaj appeared before him physically (with flesh and blood) after three days (just like Jesus Christ) and consoled him that.

"Bhiu Nakos! Mee Thujya patishi Aahe (Don't Fear! I am always with you!)

See me in my Athma Linga Padhukas given to you Do poojas to the Padhukas as you were doing to me so far

I will fulfil all your wishes

"Ananyas Chintayamthoman Ye Jana: Paryupasathey Thesham Nithyaabhiyukthanam Yogakshemam Vahamyaham"

After seeing Swamy Maharaj and spoken to him, Sri Balappa was convinced and propagated this supernatural incident to Akkalkot residents and devotees.

Sri Balappa Maharaj then established one Mutt by name Guru Mandir. In this Mandir, Shri Samarth's Guru Padhukas, his toys, dresses and other belongings are still maintained. After propogating about Shri Akkalkot Maharaj for several years, Shri Balappa attained Samadhi and his mortal remains are here in Guru Mandhir.

The Samadhi of Shri.Gangadhar Maharaj, the disciple of Shri. Balappa Maharaj is also enshrined here.

Until recently (about 1987) Shri.Gajanan Maharaj (Shivpuri) was the Chief Pontif of this Guru Mandhir. He was regarded as the incarnation of Lord Parasuram. He gave an impetus to Sanatana Dharma through propogating "AGNI HOTRAM".

A simplified "Homam" (Fire worship) for House-holds was taught by Him and even now lakhs of devotees are performing "Agnihotram" in their Homes and getting all material and spiritual benefits.

Shri Gajanan Maharaj authored many spiritual books and compiled a wonderful Ashtothram (108 names) on Shri Swamy Samarth Maharaj. Devotees should visit Guru Mandhir and get all these Pooja Materials.

Devotees can get Mahaprasad (Full meals) after noon and night Aarthis at free of cost. ( Contact Ph. No.: 02181-220727 Mobile No. C/o. Shri Mukund Kulkarni - 09970610724.)

Shri Swamy Samarth Maharaj's Samadhi Mandir @ Cholappa Mutt.

Swamy Maharaj visited and stayed at Cholappa's House for some time until the King of Akkalkot Sansthan Shri. Maloji Raje began sending money and Rations for looking after Swamy to Cholappa.

On Swamy's first visit, he blessed Cholappa with Sweet water in the well which was dry for years together. To everyone's astonishment the well is full of sweet-water (even after 160 years) till date.

When Cholappa was prepared to leave his entire family for the sake of Swamy Maharaj, Swamy threw his leather Sandals (Padhukas) on him (Blessings) and sent back to his family. The Padhuka's are still in Cholappa's home in Akkalkot which is taken to different parts of Maharashtra on procession annualy.

Cholappa wished that Swamy Maharaja's mortal remains after his Maha Samadhi should be buried in his house. So one fine morning, he was digging a place near his house so as to prepare a Burial Pit for the Swamy. Coincidentally Maharaj was passing by his house, while going Swamy told Cholappa, "Hallo! you will be buried first"!

As per Swamy's unfailing words, Cholappa attained Mukthi (Liberation) in 1877. Swamy was extremely sad about his demise. He was telling others that "now, whom shall I show my Leelas! My Cholappa is gone. I must go!".

Shri Akkalkot Maharaj attained Maha Samadhi in 1878 and as per the wishes of Sri. Cholappa. His mortal remains were buried in Cholappa's house. Still his presence is felt by devotees who visit his Samadhi Mandir and Cholappa's house where Swamy's Padhukas (leather and Silver) and other articles used by him are maintained with great devotion and respect.

Shirdi ke Saibaba told, "none is born, none dies!". When the jeevathma itself never dies; what about the Paramathma (God)!

Shri Swamy Samarth is an incarnation of Shri Nirusimha Saraswathi (the second Dattatreya Avatar). As per the approved Horoscope by Swamy, Maharaj first appeared as a young boy of Eight years in 1149 A.D. at Chelikhede village in HASTHINAPUR near Delhi, under the Banyan Tree of a Ganapathy Temple by breaking the ground (underneeth). Since 1149 A.D. he wandered every nook and corner of India, in various names (like Sanchal Bharathi) and arrived Mangalweda a small village near Solapur in 1830 (about).

After doing various leelas there, Swamy travelled down South India like Kanchipuram, Madurai, Rameshwar and came to Akkalkot in 1857. Swamy stayed there for about 21 years until 1878, when he took Samadhi.

But don't think that He is gone! He proved that He is a Chiranjeevi (Ever living) to Shri Balappa Maharaj after 3 days of Samadhi and to Shri Bhau Saheb of Nilgaon after 5 days of his Samadhi.

Even today he is answering the prayers and appearing physically and in dreams to various devotees throughout the world.

These miracles with evidences are well brought out in the First ever Tamil Book written by "Swamy Suthan" Dr. J.S. SAYIKUMAR, titled as "PESUM DEIVAM" (Speaking God) "Shri Akkalkot Maharaj Arulatchi".

Mrs. Pushpa Nadar, a Tamil devotee from Mumbai has recently renovated the Samadhi Mandir and constructed a beautiful Viman and Gopuram for Swamy's Samadhi Mandir in South Indian style.

(The founder of this Trust, has been directed by Shri Swamy Samarth Maharaj to construct a stone temple as Shridi Sai Akkalkot Maharaj Dharbar" in Pondicherry.)

The Samadhi Mandir is maintained by the descendents of Shri. Cholappa Maharaj. For more details, contact: Smt. Sheela Dinkar Poojari Cell: 99225 34734, Shri. Annu Maharaj: Cell: 99609 38307

Other important places in Akkalkot are:

Shri RajeRayan Mutt

Shri Ram Mandir

The Royal Palace.

Khas Bhag. (Garden)

Near the Bus Stand in Shirdi, Where Bhagat Mahalsapathy was a priest. This is a historical place where the Supreme Master was named as 'SAI' by Shri Mahalsapathy. Shri Swamy Samarth, Baba's predecesor also visited Khandoba Temple when he first landed in Akkalkot.

Shri Sai Baba's philosopher Sant Kabir Das's mortal remains became flowers when Kabir's followers were fighting with each other that His mortal remains should be cremated asper Hindu rites or Islamic way. When they removed the cloth on the divine body of Kabirdas, they shocked to see only flowers instead of Physical body. Those flowers were then shared by different religious people and Tombs (Samadhis) were erected in different places of India. It is believed that One of Kabir's samadhi is under this Neem tree, which was revered by Baba as His Guru's sthan (His Master's place). It was evidenced by an incident, when a lady was possessed by Khandoba (Deity), she asked to dig the earth underneath the Neem Tree. Shirdi residents got surprised to see that there was an underground room in which four or five lamps (oil) were still burning with a garland of flower inside. Suddenly Baba came to that place and ordered to close the underground room and not to disturb it.

In 1912, one devotee of Shri Swamy Samarth Shri Bai Krishnaji Alibagkar was directed to visit Shirdi instead of Akkalkot as Baba is none other than Swamy Himself. He stayed there for 6 months. As a mark of his visit Krishnaji, with the help of Dr. Ramarao Kothari prepared a marble padhukas in Mumbai. Those padhukas were installed on Shravan Poornima Holy Day with the Blessings of Baba - "These are my Prabhu's Padhukas!", under the Neem Tree. (Ref. Sai Leela Volume II Article No. 1, Page 25 by Shri. B.V. Dev).

Devotees are advised to recollect the 'Parag' (Maha Mantra) at the end of every Pooja at Shirdi, in which Shri Samarth Maharaj's Name is invariably included to confirm that Both Akkalkot Maharaj and Sai Baba are one and the same Dattavataris.

"Anantha Koti Brahmanda Nayaka
Rajadhi Raja Yogiraja Parabrahma
Samartha Sadguru Sainath Maharaj Ki Jai"

When Baba was Kabir in early birth, His Guru was Samarth Ramados. It is believed that Shri Venkusa (Baba's Guru) was the re-incarnation of Samartha Ramados. Now also he has followed the Dattatreya's throne after Shri Swamy Samarth Maharaj.

Baba advised the devotees to burn incense sticks in this Gurusthan for getting all benefits. This tradition should be continued.

When Lord Krishna was a king in Dwaraka, He ordered that the Doors of His Palace should be open 24 x 7 (always), for the benefit of His Citizens. In the same manner, Baba kept the name of this dilapated mosque as Dwaraka Mayi. He used to call this Masjid as Mashi Ayi. (The Mother Mosque).

Also Shri Sainath Maharaj has called it a 'Brahmin's Masjid'. As a Vedic Brahmin, He always kept Holy Fire (Dhuni) (24 x 7) burning and distributed the Udhi (Ash) as Prasad.

This small damaged Masjid has become a world tourist spot only because of Shri Sai's living then and even now. Recently when Sansthan people started repairing the Dhuni, Baba appeared in His portrait and on the walls of Dwaraka Mayi. Udhi is the only prasad when Baba was alive and even now, after His Samadhi in 1918.

Dwaraka Mai has witnessed innumerous divine plays by Baba. (Read Sai Satcharita). He appeared as Vithal, Dattatreya, Maruti and other Gods to those devotees who were praying them and proved that Sainath is not different from any other God. He preached that 'Sabka Malik Eak' (one God for all), at last Saibaba has become God for all. He is regarded as the Sarvamata poojitha (Sanmarga Stapithaya Nama:).

'Sai' means a Perfect Ascetic (Saint). He lived as a Perfect Saint throughout His life. He never engaged in any remunerative vocation, even when He got monies in the form of offerings (Dakshina), He distributed in the same day to all and went to Bed empty-pocketed. He begged for His food. He wore torned Kufni and stitched (mended) it by himself. He was not under the care of any body though Multi-Millionaires were ready to build wonderful houses, offer him costly dresses and delicious food. As an ascetic should not stay in a particular place, Baba used to stay alternately in Dwaraka Mayi and Chavadi (A village office).

No King on this Earth so far ever had processions daily, as Shri Sainath Maharaj had. On alternate days, when Baba used to shift His place from Dwaraka Mayi to Chavadi, a colourful and pompuous procession with red carpet, lights, music, horse, etc. as was done to a King, was conducted by His loving devotees.

During the procession, in between Dwaraka Mayi and Chavadi, Baba used to stand and stare at Hanuman Temple for a few minutes. Once Baba Himself told "Maruti Majya Bhai" (Maruthi is my Brother); also Baba told that "My parents have dedicated me to the safe custody of Hanuman".

Once, a devotee asked Baba, whether the Epic Ramayana was just a story or Lord Shri Rama's real history. Baba replied "Ramayana is real. I was there at that time".

If you connect Baba's statements regarding Rama and Hanuman and his age as Lakhs of years, etc. you can easily conclude that Shirdi Saibaba is none other than Lord Sri Rama. That is why His Holy Name is easily mingling with Ram, as

The visitors to Shirdi can have darshan of Hanuman as well as Chavadi. Now-a-days, due to heavy crowd, taking darshan at Samadhi Mandir or Dwarakamayi is very difficult and time-consuming process. The only relatively free and Calm place is this Chavadi where one can sit quietly and enjoy the presence of Baba.

(One of Baba's personal attendants) Abdul Baba was directed by Nagpur Hazrat Ali Tajuddin Baba to serve Sainath. His cottage is just opposite to Chavadi. One can see rare photographs here.

A beautiful garden developed and maintained by Shri Sai Baba by his own Holy Hands is an important place to see in Shirdi. It showed Baba's love of Nature and guided His followers to do physical work daily for keeping the body and mind healthy.

Baba's sweet-water well is still giving water for the Garden. To show the devotees the importance of light worship, Baba lit one 'NANDHA DEEP' in the Garden in between two large Trees planted and nurtured by Him. This light is also called as 'AKHANDA DEEP' which means-eternal light (24 x 7) which is kept burning for more than 150 years. (Like Dhuni).

Near Lendi Garden, there are some of the Tombs (Samadhis) of Baba's ardent servants like Abdul Baba, Tatyakote Patil, Nanawali, etc. Also one can find the Tomb of Baba's beloved Horse 'Shyam Karna' (Shyam Sundar).

Satchitananda Sadguru Sainath Maharaj took Samadhi (disappeared physically and reunited with the supreme soul) on 15.10.1918, Tuesday at 2.30 p.m. Just before that Baba instructed His devotees to take him to the Dagadi Wada, A large House with Temple constructed in stone by Baba Saheb Booty with directions and Blessings of Sainath.

The Hindus and Muslim devotees were quarrelling among each other that Baba's mortal remains should be buried as per their own religious rites. At last after 36 Hours of difference of opinions, voting was conducted. As majority votes were in favour of Hindus, and as per the wishes of Shri Sai Baba, it was decided to place Baba's samadhi in Booty wada.

Since, 1918 till 1954, a small black and white photo of Baba was kept on the Top of Samadhi and worshipped. Later in 1954 The present Marble statue was installed and all the Aartis and Poojas were shifted from Dwaraka Mayi to Samadhi Mandir.

This eternal king's palace is visited by 30000 pilgrims daily (on an average) and on Festival Days this number crosses 1 lakh devotees. Now Shirdi has become the second Richest Temple in the Country, next to Tirumala - Tirupati Devasthan in Andhra Pradesh.
